The incident happened on Tuesday, May 9 around 11:45 a.m., when police responded to the area of 161 South 2nd Ave. on a report of a man stabbed in the chest, according to Mount Vernon Director of Communications Timothy Allen.
Once they arrived at the address, which is down the street from Mt. Vernon Daycare Center at 151 South 2nd Ave., officers found 37-year-old Karoy Chandler with a stab wound to the upper right side of his chest.
Chandler was then rushed to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment, where he is expected to make a full recovery, Allen said.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that the stabbing happened in front of 227 South 3rd Ave. Officers also quickly found the suspect, 59-year-old Mount Vernon resident Alfred Patton, and arrested him a few blocks away from the location of the stabbing.
Patton was then taken to Mount Vernon City Jail, where he was charged with:
- First-degree attempted assault;
- Second-degree assault;
- Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Allen also added that Patton has a criminal history dating back to the early 1980s, including past arrests for robbery, burglary, assault, and narcotics offenses.
He was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court on Tuesday afternoon, May 10.
